Steve’s journey into the fitness profession was a little non-traditional. He graduated Duke University with a BS in Zoology, but discovered computer science late in his undergraduate career. He worked as a systems administrator at Duke while taking graduate courses in computer science and eventually moved to Colorado to pursue a career in software engineering. Three companies and three layoffs later, Steve decided enough was enough!
After leaving the computer software industry, Steve started his career in the fitness profession as a Spinning™ instructor and became interested in exercise physiology, personal training, and coaching after completing his first Ironman in 2007. “I found the race and the whole Ironman experience incredibly inspirational. If you had told me in 2001 when I did my first sprint-distance triathlon that I would someday do an Ironman (I did two in 2007!), I would have said you were crazy! I think people are capable of much more than they give themselves credit for.”
Steve has become an experienced amateur endurance athlete, having successfully competed in five full Ironman triathlons (including Ironman Hawaii!). His athletic resume also includes numerous other endurance events, such as XTerra off-road triathlons, the Triple Bypass, el Tour de Tucson, the Tucson and Colorado Marathons, the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon (including the “Double”), and the Leadville Trail Marathon.
Steve has been a continuously certified and practicing personal trainer since 2009. In addition to his certification from ACE as a Personal Trainer, Steve has held various coaching and teaching certifications throughout his career, from USA Triathlon and USA Cycling, to ACE group fitness and AFAA yoga. Outside the gym, he has extensive experience coaching endurance sports athletes, both individually and through group training, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Colorado Springs-based triathlon teams.
Steve has a grown son who is currently serving in the Navy. Steve is extremely active and is an avid skier as well as a recreational athlete. His other interests include computers (of course!), technology, photography, and home repair.
